Things are still coming to fruition. We started fish farming in the upper reaches of the Eystur Rangá four years ago. We dug over 120,000 eggs in 22 holes and last year released about 60,000 fry into the river with the help of good friends. Conditions above Tungufoss are very good, the temperature and gravel are ideal for spawning. We installed a temperature recorder from Star Odda last year and now have temperature measurements that show that the conditions here are ideal. We electrofished last year with Jóhannes Sturlaugsson and then it became clear that this has been very successful. We found hatchlings and the fry that were released last year have reached the size to go to sea. The fry were very well maintained and some have already gone to sea.
Now we are adding more and are doing spawning and releases as well as transporting live salmon to the area. The fry releases in July went very well and we finally managed to finish the areas in the upper part of the river and released over 100,000 fry. With the help of good people and friends this is possible. We thank everyone who has helped us with this big project. We also thank the Eystri Rangá Fishing Association for their help, as they have supported the project in a unique way and provided us with fry and salmon for releases.
Expanding habitat for our salmon is very important to protect our population. It is not enough to expand and create new habitat for our salmon in these times. The Laxá River in Keldum is a large water area with exceptionally good conditions for our salmon.
This is the first indicator of making the river and the water area sustainable for spawning. The river is three times larger than the Elliðaárnar and Laxá á Leirársveit rivers in size.
Kári G Schram has been with us from the beginning and here you can see an excerpt from a documentary we are currently working on.
It is necessary in these times to expand and create new habitats for our salmon.
